We are ikat obsessed. One, because it involves tying and dying and two, because many ikat weavers are rooted in Andhra Pradesh, the birthplace of our co-founder, Mriga. We were too blessed to meet Suraiya Hassan Bose, a preserver of the classic weave who shared her stories and communities for us to explore. Taking this collection to Toronto to bring it to photo life, the full circle of this collection still makes us beam.
We went to Banaras aka Varanasi aka home of the Ganga with our mummies. Things got real quick, real fast. It took us a minute to get into the very in-your-face rhythm of life and death out there, leading us to some beautiful textiles, many contradictory rituals & practices and lots of people watching.
This trip gave birth to the soul of NBNW. All the feelings we had while meeting the Khatri family showing us the Bandhani ways, was how it all started. Our first collection and our first experience developing our most favourite tie dye technique.
